DESCRIPTION: Length up to 9mm. One of the insects known as 'Carrot Flies' or 'Rust Flies'. A generally orange species with dark eyes and noticeable double-spectacle shaped markings on the thorax. The third antennal joint is large and has no darkening at the base of the arista on the outer side. The hairs beneath the second antennal joint are somehat short. The wings with a yellowish tinge, especially near veins. BEHAVIOUR: Larvae live in the roots, bulbs and non-woody stems of plants and can be a pest. DISTRIBUTION: Widespread in southern Britain but very local further North. HABITAT: In and around rich vegetation and crops with egg laying potential.  PERIOD: Best seen May to August.
